In 1983, a small group of newcomers organized to support what was then called the Matheny School and Hospital. The Friends, now numbering close to 150, is guided by a dedicated board of directors and over the course of 25 years has raised in excess of $2,000,000.
As anthropologist Margaret Meade has said, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever does." The Friends celebrates its ability to affect change. We welcome new members and ideas.
In 2004, The Friends of Matheny was recognized with the Outstanding Community Organization Award, presented by the New Jersey Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. The Friends have also been honored several times with the United Way of Somerset County STAR Award.
